This is a song about how we keep versions of other people inside our heads, and update our models accordingly as those people grow and change. Specifically it is a song about the strange feeling you get when you realize the model in your head of a certain person is very outdated and inaccurate.
The metaphor of an echo to express this idea slapped me in the face when as I was having the aforementioned strange feeling, one of my favorite programs on public radio introduced itself "I'm John Diliberto and you've been listening to echoes".
The effects used and production of this track is an intentional nod to the sound design featured in a lot of that program.

it took a voice on the radio to tell me.
I don't miss you
when I don't see you,
but I pull that off with mental gymnastics.
I don't think about you in the present tense.
I know that's shitty but it's useful.
